We’re on a role with websites!

Posted by dkahn on August 31, 2007

First, I have to talk about this old website that came out when Youtube first rolled out. It’s called Riya. I can’t believe it’s not really used as much as youtube and even google. It’s a visual search tool where you upload an image of someone and it matches a couple of images up with it. Who knows? There might be a couple of photos with you in the site as well. I know. It’s totally awesome.

PeekYou is a relatively new website that makes it so people have the ability to create profiles and then anyone can search for you and see your profile. It’s a People Search Engine.

Art of Office is a Mac website created by Microsoft that allows Mac users to upload their art created by Microsoft Applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Office, Excel and more, to share with other users. Mac users are not liking this because of the delay of the new Mac office 2008. I still can’t understand why Microsoft would createa website specifically for Mac users.

And finally, twitter is on steroids, making new things on their site left and right. I personally like the idea of the Twitter Blocks althought I can’t seem to see any blocks. All I see is an arrow pointing to nothing and saying “Usernames block.” You can see all their additions to twitter right here.

UPDATE!: Just in case you don’t read comments, Tom just commented us (The first comment on our blog!) saying that they fixed the bug that didn’t allow me to see any blocks. I went back on to see, and there it was, cool and clever. Thanks Tom!
Now the entertainment for today! Opera Mini is now on sidekick. Here’s the commercial:

Awesome Tech Term

Posted by dkahn on August 30, 2007

“(MUHN-jing) The act of altering an e-mail address posted on a Web page to make it unreadable to bots and harvesters that crawl the Web for e-mail addresses to include on spam lists. Munging is where the e-mail address is not fully written out but is still understandable to anyone reading the Web page. The characters to the left of the @ symbol in your e-mail address should not be altered when munging. For example, munging the fakeaddress@webopedia.com e-mail address could result in something like fakeaddress-AT-webopedia-DOT-com.

The term munge is frequently defined as “mash until no good” and is also called address munging.”

Found on Webopedia.com

P.S. Doesn’t that sound like it would be a British term?

Improve your Search Engine

Posted by dkahn on August 30, 2007

My friend just sent me an invite to test the Mahalo Firefox extension. This search engine searches with you preffered search engine, improving it to the limit. Apparently it’s the first human-powered search engine (meaning it asks you if you would recommend the page to a friend and if you say yes, it brings the link to a higher value when someone searches for something relating to that) but I think I’ve seen some human-powered search engines before.
